Poor Ticket Sales for the Rio Olympics: On the Importance of Marketing Packaging

Published:2016-07-28 · Industry News

[China Packaging News] According to the Associated Press, this year's Rio Olympics will provide a total of 450,000 condoms for athletes, with an average of 42 per athlete. However, only 150,000 condoms were provided at the 2012 London Olympics, while the number of condoms at the Rio Olympics was three times that at the London Olympics. Therefore, some people refer to this Rio Olympics as "the most vulgar sports event".

The reason why the number of condoms has increased for the first time is partly because, in addition to providing 350,000 male condoms, the Olympic Games also provided 100,000 female condoms. The official also said that 175,000 packs of lubricant would be provided. Athletes can obtain condoms at the clinics in the Olympic Village and 41 vending machines.

According to Slate, the tradition of providing condoms to Olympic athletes can be traced back to the 1988 Seoul Olympics. A total of 8,500 condoms were provided at that time. Since then, the tradition has been maintained. The number of condoms has also been increasing year by year. The 1992 Barcelona Olympics provided 90,000. In 1996, the Atlanta Olympic team added another 15,000 players on this basis. At the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Australian organizers initially arranged 70,000 condoms, but they were all used up in the middle. Later, Australia distributed another 20,000. At the 2004 Athens Olympics, Durex donated 130,000 condoms. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, even the slogan "Faster, Higher, Stronger" was printed on the packaging of condoms.

According to a Brazilian newspaper, the increase in the number of condoms at this year's Olympic Games has nothing to do with the Zika virus that can be transmitted through sex, but it can give 1,000 athletes more opportunities to have safe sex.

"The quantity of condoms this time is very large," said Zac Purchase, who has won gold and silver MEDALS in rowing at the Olympics. "But the truth is not what people seem. This is not some kind of concentrated sexual activity. What we are discussing are those athletes who focus on giving their best performance.
