Thailand's Prepackaged Food Labeling Regulations May Be Amended

Published:2021-04-16 · Industry News

[ppzhan Abstract] In the current market economy, no matter which country it is, once new regulations and policies are issued, they will affect the development of the related industries. Therefore, enterprises must be clear about policy changes, especially those whose main business is export. Recently, Thailand proposed to implement new pre-packaged food labeling regulations, and relevant Chinese enterprises should pay close attention to their development.

Recently, the Thailand Food and Drug Administration proposed to the World Trade Organization (WTO) the implementation of new pre-packaged food labeling regulations. Once the proposal is approved, the new regulations will replace the labeling regulations implemented since 2000.

The content of the new food labeling regulations includes: 1. "Pre-packaged food labels" conform to the general standard for the labeling of pre-packaged foods in the Codex; 2. Definitions of pre-packaged food, best before date, shelf life, food serial number, repackaging and allergens; 3. Except in individual cases, the new food labeling regulations require all pre-packaged foods to carry food labels; 4. Certain substances or ingredients in food need to be clearly declared; 5. The minimum font size in label information; 6. To prevent pre-packaged foods from containing certain allergenic ingredients, allergen information needs to be listed on the food label.

In this regard, the inspection and quarantine department reminds relevant enterprises: first, strengthen contact with importers, inspection and quarantine departments or industry associations, pay close attention to the revision and implementation dates of Thailand's pre-packaged food labeling regulations, and study countermeasures as early as possible; second, study in depth the requirements of Thailand's pre-packaged food labeling regulations, and design and label strictly in accordance with the new regulations; third, strictly review the pathogens contained in the products and specify the corresponding information clearly on the labels; fourth, rely on the technical capabilities of third-party laboratories or inspection and quarantine service platforms to strengthen testing and ensure the smooth export of products.
