Many Problems with Wood Packaging: Enterprises Must Take Adequate Control Measures

Published:2021-04-16 · Industry News

[ppzhan abstract] With the growing development of trade, the market demand for wooden packaging, which is commonly used in logistics packaging, is also growing larger and larger, but along with this growth problems keep emerging one after another. Recently, the Jiangsu Changzhou Inspection and Quarantine Bureau issued a reminder on this.

Recently, several batches of outbound wooden packaging have successively been reported by foreign countries for violations due to live insects, mold or non-standard IPPC marks.

At present, high-temperature and high-humidity weather still prevails in some areas of the south, and pests such as insects remain highly active; because the moisture content of some wood exceeds the standard, it easily becomes moldy after being sealed in a container for one or two months before reaching its destination.

Some marking-applying enterprises have weak quality and safety awareness, and the anti-epidemic measures for finished products after pest treatment are inadequate during storage or transportation, resulting in secondary infestation by pests.

A small number of enterprises using wooden packaging, in order to control packaging costs, purchase outbound wooden packaging from enterprises that do not have the qualification for processing outbound wooden packaging, resulting in some outbound solid wood packaging not having undergone effective pest treatment.

Some enterprises do not provide adequate training for relevant personnel or are lax in management, leading workers to randomly add supporting wood or dunnage and other packaging materials that have not undergone effective pest treatment during the container loading process, increasing the risk of wooden packaging carrying pests.

For this reason, the Jiangsu Changzhou Inspection and Quarantine Bureau reminds all enterprises using outbound wooden packaging to choose enterprises with the qualification for processing outbound wooden packaging when purchasing the packaging they need, and not to seek a small short-term gain and thereby suffer greater losses; when signing contracts with wooden packaging manufacturers, it is advisable to write requirements such as the absence of bark and insect holes and the upper limit of moisture content into the contract, and use these as acceptance evidence and standards; during the storage of wooden packaging, carry out relevant anti-epidemic measures, such as storing wooden packaging separately in a clean and dry place, and conducting regular cleaning and chemical disinfection to prevent secondary infestation by pests; and strengthen training on inspection and quarantine laws and regulations related to wooden packaging to prevent workers from randomly adding packaging materials that have not undergone pest treatment during the container loading process.
