National Standard Curbing Excessive Packaging Takes Effect Tomorrow
From April 2010, food and cosmetics will no longer be allowed to "wear" more than three layers, and the packaging void ratio shall not exceed 60%. The national standard "Requirements for restricting excessive packaging of commodities - Food and cosmetics," approved and issued by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine and the Standardization Administration of China, officially came into force on April 1. Relevant experts said that the implementation of this national standard is conducive to strengthening supervision over the relevant manufacturers and to advocating low-carbon consumption.
It is understood that the standard sets mandatory provisions on indicators such as the void ratio, number of layers and cost of sales packaging for food and cosmetics. At the same time, for commodities with relatively serious excessive packaging such as beverages, alcoholic drinks, pastries, health foods and cosmetics, the standard's indicator requirements have been adjusted accordingly; excessive packaging involves issues of layers, packaging void ratio, cost, materials and design, and mandatory provisions have in particular been made for three indicators - the void ratio, number of layers and cost of sales packaging for food and cosmetics - namely: the number of packaging layers shall not exceed 3, the packaging void ratio shall not exceed 60%, and the total cost of all packaging other than the primary packaging shall not exceed 20% of the selling price of the commodity.
Specific provisions on the packaging void ratio of commodities:
Beverage alcohol shall not exceed 50%
Pastries shall not exceed 55%
Health foods and cosmetics shall not exceed 60%
