Australian Supermarket Giants Join Plastics Pact to Use Green Plastic Packaging Across the Board by 2025
Australian supermarket giants Woolworths, Coles and Aldi, as well as major food manufacturers, have pledged to make all plastic packaging reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025.
Under a broader industry ANZPAC plastics pact, plastic packaging waste sent to landfill and entering rivers and seas will be eliminated.
The Minderoo Foundation of Andrew and Nicola Forrest released a report saying that 100 companies account for 90% of global single-use plastic production.
More than 130 million tonnes of plastic were discarded in 2019, almost all of it burned, buried in dumps or simply discarded into the natural environment.
Nearly 60 organizations in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific region have signed the plastics pact, including major supermarket chains, Amcor, Coca-Cola, Nestlé, Unilever, Arnott's, Asahi, Colgate-Palmolive, Mondelez, Pepsico, Unilever, Veolia, PlanetArk, KeepCup, the Australian Beverages Council and TerraCycle Australia.
The ANZPAC Plastics Pact covers the entire plastics supply chain, from supermarkets, packaging manufacturers and retailers to resource recovery companies, government agencies and non-profit organizations.
Under the leadership of the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO), members of the new pact have committed to four actionable targets by 2025: eliminate unnecessary and problematic plastic packaging through redesign, innovation and other means; ensure that 100% of plastic packaging is recyclable, reusable or compostable; increase the amount of plastic packaging currently collected and recycled by at least 25%; and ensure that new plastic packaging contains an average of 25% recycled content.
