Development of Group Standard "General Requirements for Green Paper-based Takeaway Packaging" Officially Launched, Chenming Paper and Other Papermakers Set to Benefit
Recently, the China Technical Association of Paper Industry officially launched the formulation of the group standard "General Requirements for Green Paper Food Delivery Packaging." It is reported that this standard applies to green paper food delivery packaging using paper as the base material, coated with degradable plastic film or water-based acrylic, including three major parts — drinking utensils, tableware and packaging bags — and covering products such as paper cups, paper bowls, paper meal boxes, pulp molding, paper straws and paper carry bags. As an extension of the "plastic restriction order," the formulation of the "General Requirements for Green Paper Food Delivery Packaging" will further enhance the status of packaging paper and promote the standardization of "paper for plastic." Large paper enterprises such as Chenming Paper will undoubtedly benefit.
As the "plastic restriction order" keeps being upgraded, paper packaging products, with their characteristics of being eco-friendly, light and easy to obtain, have gradually penetrated into the fields of daily life previously occupied by plastic packaging products. In particular, the rapid expansion of the food delivery and e-commerce industries keeps expanding the single-use packaging market.
Publicly available data show that in 2017 China consumed about 19.8 billion single-use meal boxes, in 2019 about 40 billion, and in 2020 about 45 billion, showing an upward trend.
Paper, as a relatively mature plastic substitute material, is increasingly favored by the market, also opening up new market space for related paper enterprises. In the past year, the tight supply of various high-grade packaging papers such as white card and food card has confirmed this with facts.
According to Sublime China Information data, from January 2020 to March 2021 the price of white card from mainstream manufacturers consistently showed a trend of volatile upward movement. Although white card prices have fluctuated slightly recently, some brokerages believe that, given the previously rapid rise in paper prices, short-term fluctuation and consolidation is a normal phenomenon. With the expansion of global COVID-19 vaccination and some easing of the overseas pandemic, the PPI data of major countries basically rising month by month and clear signs of economic recovery, these will all become favorable factors supporting the development of the paper industry, and white card remains worth looking forward to.
In addition, the optimization of the industry landscape further tilts the balance toward leading enterprises with supply chain advantages. For industry leaders, with matched self-made pulp capacity, stable supply from self-built pulp production bases and strong cost control, profit margins are expected to improve.
