Paper Lid and Metsä Board launch barrier-coated paper lid for takeaway beverage cups

Published:2021-10-09 · Industry News

Following long-term cooperation between the Finnish startup "Paper Lid" and Metsä Board, part of the Metsä Group, a 100% recyclable paper lid designed specifically for takeaway beverage cups has been successfully developed.

The lid is made from fully recyclable barrier-coated paperboard and is suitable for hot and cold drinks. It uses a new technology developed by Paper Lid that can form paperboard into the required shape. The lid has a one-piece design, clips firmly onto the cup body, and offers performance comparable to traditional plastic lids.

"Reducing the amount of plastic waste generated is a crucial issue, and together with partners we are continuously developing and testing innovative solutions centred on the idea of the circular economy," said Ilkka Harju, Packaging Business Director for EMEA and Asia-Pacific at Metsä Board. "The paper lid is an excellent example of such a solution."

"For many years we have been committed to developing a 100% recyclable paperboard lid, and now, thanks to the support provided by Metsä Board, we have been able to develop a functional solution." Matti Salo, founder of Paper Lid

noja said.

The company has long focused on innovative solutions, and its production facility in Masku, south-western Finland, is ready for full production. "Being able to bring this concept to market is truly exciting." Salo

noja said. "Paperboard made from renewable virgin fibre is inherently a sustainable raw material. By combining our know-how with that of Metsä Board, we have been able to develop an innovative solution that we believe has great potential to change the takeaway cup market."

The paper lid's carbon footprint is more than 50% lower than that of a plastic lid, and it is fully recyclable.
