Balance, Stability, Sustainability — Asia Symbol at Shanghai Pulp Week

From October 11 to 15, 2021, Shanghai Pulp Week was grandly held, hosted by the China Paper Industry Chamber of Commerce under the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, with Asia Symbol co-organizing and exclusively sponsoring the "Shanghai Pulp Week Annual Conference." The conference invited leaders and experts from authoritative departments, institutions and enterprises, including the United Front Work Department, the National Development and Reform Commission, the State Administration for Market Regulation, and major domestic and foreign pulp and paper enterprises.

Theme of the Pulp Week annual conference: New Growth, Rebalancing

Policies and topics such as dual carbon, dual reduction, dual control and rising energy and raw material prices bring different challenges and new opportunities to many industries. At the keynote speech of the opening ceremony of the Pulp Week annual conference on the morning of the 14th, Mr. Hu Wei, Vice President of the China Paper Industry Chamber of Commerce and Vice President of Business of Asia Symbol, was invited to give a presentation titled "Hardwood Pulp Market Analysis and Outlook."

Mr. Hu focused on three aspects—the macroeconomic environment, hardwood pulp supply and hardwood pulp demand—to analyse the industry's macroeconomic situation and development in recent years. He said the global economy continues to recover, with global GDP expected to grow 5.8% in 2021, 4.7% in 2022 and 4% in 2023; as the pandemic becomes normalized, and with the mismatch in the distribution of the pandemic and vaccines, the global economy will recover in a staggered sequence following China, consumer countries, manufacturing countries and resource countries.

Mr. Hu pointed out that since 2021 global wood pulp has entered a new round of capacity expansion, but constrained by limited global wood chip resources, new wood pulp supply will fall short of expectations. Many factors will also affect the market, such as persistently low port inventories in Europe and China, challenges to pulp supply from global logistics, and the excessive price gap for hardwood pulp between China and European and American markets.

Mr. Hu also analysed hardwood pulp demand, pointing out that global demand for hardwood pulp continues to increase and global demand for paper and paperboard will see an accelerated rebound; considering plastic restriction factors, the growth in demand for paper and paperboard will be even more pronounced; at the same time, China's paper industry is gradually entering a new round of capacity expansion, and production and power restrictions together with "dual carbon" will accelerate the process of industrial optimization and restructuring. Resource-based enterprises with integrated forestry-pulp-paper operations and captive power plants will have more advantages under the "dual carbon" policy.

In the series of activities of this Pulp Week, the "Dual Carbon Action Plan for the Whole Industry Chain of the Pulping and Papermaking Industry" initiative was launched, and reports such as "Change and the Way Out under the 'Dual Control of Energy Consumption' Policy" and "'Dual Carbon' Goal Roadmap and the Future" were published.
