Express Delivery Industry Steps Up Whole-Process "Greening," with Share of Parcels Free of Secondary Packaging Expected to Reach 90%
As major e-commerce platforms begin their promotional campaigns, nearly 400 million express parcels have been moving across the country every day since June. However, a reporter's investigation found that excessive packaging of express deliveries is still common.
The reporter estimated that the volume of the unpacked packaging is about five times that of the purchased goods, and much of it cannot be reused and can only be sent to a recycling station.
Innovative R&D: green packaging breaks through technical and cost barriers
According to staff, Tianjin has about 200 such stations, each handling a recycling volume of about 5 tonnes per day, of which express packaging waste accounts for about 80%.
At present, China's express delivery industry handles an average daily business volume of 350 million pieces and serves nearly 700 million users per day, ranking first in the world for many consecutive years. At the China Post Green Packaging Innovation Laboratory, the reporter saw this packaging prototyping machine making samples.
According to the introduction, degradable tape is a difficult point in research and development. After countless tensile tests, researchers finally launched a new fully biodegradable environmentally friendly tape in 2023. During waste recycling, the tape and the carton do not need to be separated, and under suitable conditions, the tape can even degrade directly into water and carbon dioxide.
The express delivery industry accelerates the advancement of "greening" across the whole process
More and more express delivery and logistics companies are also advancing "greening" across the whole process. At this express outlet in Yiwu, Zhejiang, consumers can use the express outer packaging they bring themselves to offset delivery fees. In the transportation link, express companies have replaced 9.6-meter box trucks with 15-meter to 17-meter long high-capacity drop-and-hook trailers, which can reduce pollutant emissions per unit of express mail by more than 70%. At the postal processing center in Guizhou, many e-commerce products have begun to use this kind of circular clean-flow box, which no longer requires tape to seal the box, as the box body has its own lock.
