Green packaging leads a new consumer trend, with more than 2.73 million packaging-related companies in existence
Not long ago, excessive packaging was widely criticized, but today a packaging revolution is quietly taking place. From degradable materials to minimalist design, from reduced packaging to recycling, green packaging is becoming a new arena of brand competition. The state has successively issued standards limiting excessive packaging, driving the packaging industry to transform toward lightweighting and recyclability and to return packaging to its essence of protecting goods.
Technological innovation empowers packaging. Smart packaging can monitor food freshness in real time, active packaging can extend shelf life, plant-based materials replace conventional plastics, and new eco-friendly materials such as mushroom mycelium and seaweed film have already been put into commercial use. Leading brands have rolled out solutions such as "zero-plastic packaging" and "shipping in original cartons", which both reduce costs and win consumer goodwill.
Green packaging is not only an environmental choice but also a business opportunity. Data shows that more than 70% of consumers are willing to pay a premium for eco-friendly packaging, and sales of sustainable packaging products continue to grow. From production to consumption, a packaging transformation featuring "reduction, recyclability and greater greenness" is injecting fresh vitality into the consumer market.
Data from Tianyancha Professional Edition shows that, as of now, China has more than 2.737 million existing and active packaging-related enterprises. Of these, about 186,000 new related enterprises have been registered so far in 2026. Judging from the trend in registration numbers, registrations of packaging-related enterprises have grown year by year over the past five years and reached a peak in 2025.
In terms of regional distribution, Guangdong Province, Zhejiang Province and Jiangsu Province rank at the top for the number of packaging-related enterprises, with more than 470,000, 405,000 and 296,000 respectively.
