After years of development, the plastic flexible packaging industry has become one of the fastest-growing sectors in China's plastics industry, with its annual growth rate remaining at

about %, and domestic market demand for plastic film growing at an annual rate of

%. However, China's plastic flexible packaging industry currently faces an overall backward level of technical equipment and a small business operating scale; excess production capacity caused by an irrational product structure; increasingly prominent contradictions between industrial development and environmental protection; and an obvious gap with advanced international levels. Facing this new situation, the plastic flexible packaging industry should accelerate technological innovation, achieve industrial upgrading, and actively adopt new raw materials and new technologies to shift plastic flexible packaging products toward high performance and multifunctionality. First, it should develop high-barrier packaging materials that improve protective performance and extend shelf life; second, it should accelerate the development and application of aseptic packaging materials, antibacterial packaging films and radiation-resistant packaging films; third, it should adopt nanocomposite packaging materials to promote a tremendous transformation of traditional plastic packaging materials; fourth, it should produce environmentally friendly plastic packaging materials, such as easily recyclable and reusable plastic packaging materials, and easily environmentally degradable plastics (

) including biodegradable plastics, zero-pollution foam plastics, thin-wall bottles and pouch-type packaging containers.
