Massachusetts, USA Plans to Introduce a Plastic Bottle Ban
Editor's note: Legislators in Massachusetts, USA, are drafting a new bill - a plastic bottle ban. It is reported that whether the draft plastic bottle ban can ultimately be elevated to the level of law will depend on the parliamentary referendum campaign held this autumn.
Following the announcement by Washington, D.C. that it would enact a ban on single-use plastic packaging, Massachusetts is not to be outdone. After plastic bag bans in various US states were successively settled, legislators in Massachusetts are drafting a new bill - a plastic bottle ban.
Last April, the Massachusetts Senate and House of Representatives unanimously passed a plastic shopping bag ban. The ban received strong support from the Massachusetts Agricultural Committee, the Natural Resources Defense Council and the environmental organization Sierra Club. Shortly afterwards, various draft bans kept emerging in the state.
"The emergence of various drafts is a concrete manifestation of how deeply environmental awareness has taken root in Massachusetts. However, for a bill to be elevated to legal will is by no means an easy matter; it must go through many legal procedures," said James Eldridge, a legislator of the state.
According to another legislator, although the various environment-related proposals have left the Senate dazzled and have raised the threshold for accepting bills, the review standards of the two chambers, the Massachusetts Senate and House of Representatives, for the draft plastic bottle ban will be relaxed somewhat.
It is reported that whether the draft plastic bottle ban can ultimately be elevated to the level of law will depend on the parliamentary referendum campaign held this autumn.
