Starting from May 1, 2007, a standard on the characterization of four-colour printing will be formally implemented. This standard, whose full title is GB/T 20439-2006 Graphic Technology — Prepress Digital Data Exchange — Input Data for Characterization of Four-Colour Printing, was recently approved by the Standardization Administration of China and handed to China Standards Press for publication, and is expected to be officially released to the public by the end of this year.

The standard was organized and completed by the National Printing Standardization Technical Committee on the basis of the content of the ISO 12642 standard, and is a recommended national printing standard. The standard defines a colour target comprising 928 combinations of cyan, magenta, yellow and black ink values, and this colour target was measured in order to provide colour characterization data for the principal printing specifications. The specific technical content of the standard is equivalent to the American national standard IT 8.7/3-1993, and it is a companion standard to the national standard GB/T 18721-2002 Graphic Technology — CMYK Standard Colour Image Data (CMYK/SCID)
