As Typhoon In-Fa Bears Down, How Should Packaging and Printing Companies in Zhejiang, Shanghai, Jiangsu and Shandong Mount Their Defense
The losses caused by the much-watched Henan flood disaster are extremely large. As of 12:00 on the 23rd, according to preliminary statistics, Henan's insurance industry had received a cumulative 176,900 claims reports, with estimated losses of RMB 5.827 billion. In Henan, the workshops and warehouses of many packaging and printing enterprises were flooded, raw materials and equipment were soaked in water, and news of factory shutdowns kept emerging, with inestimable property losses.
Before the Henan flood had subsided, rainstorm warnings sounded again along the coastal areas of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai and Shandong. This year's No. 6 typhoon "In-Fa" and No. 7 typhoon "Cempaka" struck one after another.
This year's No. 6 typhoon "In-Fa" had, at around 12:30 on July 25,
made landfall in Putuo District, Zhoushan.
The National Meteorological Center reported at 18:15 on the 25th:
"In-Fa" is located at the junction of Jinshan, Shanghai and Pinghu, Zhejiang,
on the sea about 90 kilometers east-southeast, and has now entered Hangzhou Bay,
and will move west-northwest at about 15 kilometers per hour. Its intensity has weakened slightly; it is expected to pass through Jiangsu around the 27th–28th and reach Shandong around the 29th–30th.
Typhoon warnings along the Zhejiang coast:
In 2020, global losses from natural disasters reached US$210 billion, with insured losses of US$82 billion, both far higher than in 2019. Among them, China's summer floods were the single event with the largest global losses, causing total losses of about US$17 billion in 2020, of which only about 2% was insured.
In other words, when Chinese enterprises encounter natural disasters, they basically rely on their own defenses and self-rescue to cope. Therefore,
in the face of typhoon weather, how the packaging and printing industry can prevent itself from being breached by typhoons has become a top priority for enterprises.
In September 2016, Typhoon Meranti struck Xiamen, causing many carton packaging enterprises, including Hexing Packaging, to suffer disasters, with some enterprises suffering severe losses; in the Xiamen area there was even a period when a carton was hard to find.
In October 2015, Typhoon Mujigae swept across Zhanjiang, Guangdong, causing the workshops of most local paper mills and carton factories to collapse, machines to be destroyed and raw materials to be flooded, with heavy losses. Zhanjiang Chenming, which was severely affected, was forced to shut down all production lines, with direct losses of more than RMB 20 million; Zhanjiang Yurong Paper and Zhanjiang Runding Packaging Co., Ltd. lost more than RMB 20 million each!
When a typhoon strikes, how can losses be minimized?
Besides paying attention to typhoon warnings and buying flood insurance, the following response measures should also be taken:
- Set up an emergency response team for sudden disasters. Led by the relevant responsible person and operating on a long-term basis, with related responsibilities assigned to specific individuals. Conduct regular inspections of workshops, drainage equipment and warehouses where base paper is stored, and eliminate difficult problems. When a typhoon approaches, prepare rain gear, lighting, tarpaulins and other materials, promptly distribute defensive forces and carry out emergency work in a timely manner.
- Store inventory on the second floor or a higher safe floor as far as possible; inventory stored on the first floor must be raised at least 60CM above the ground. If that is truly impossible, use pallets and similar tools to raise paper rolls and cartons; the company's forklift workers should be on call 24 hours a day, ready to move away base paper and other materials that may be flooded at any time.
- Clean all drainage ditches (pipes) in the plant area to keep them clear, and no goods may be stored within 1 meter around the drainage ditches (pipes).
