Klabin invests BRL 40 million in on-machine direct barrier coating
Klabin recently announced that it will invest 40 million reais at its MonteAlegre paper mill in Parana, Brazil, to develop and apply dispersion barrier technology, which can apply a barrier coating directly on the mill's paperboard production line.
This investment will be used to modernize the coating machine of the MonteAlegre unit, after which its annual capacity will increase to 60,000 tonnes. The main feature of this technology solution is dispersion barrier, which can help the paperboard achieve barrier properties against water, water vapor and grease, while reducing the use of additional packaging or the application of additional coatings, and can preserve the original characteristics of paper recycling and composting. In addition, in the future, barrier coatings can also be added directly in the paperboard machine.
Flávio Deganutti, Paperboard Director at Klabin, said: "For more than a decade, Klabin has been investing in sustainable barrier technologies and has consolidated its market segment through solutions such as KlafoldFZ and KlafoldGB, making a positive contribution to effectively avoiding the use of plastic barrier materials. This investment will expand the range of applications served by Klabin's large-scale production, including chilled/frozen foods (pizza, nuggets, hamburgers, meat, fish, sausages), industrial foods (protein, broth, biscuits), laundry detergent, paper cups and more complex liquid food solutions."
The project's renovation will be carried out in two phases. The first phase will upgrade the application technology, and the second phase will focus on increasing capacity and strengthening new product development, especially the development of renewable energy products.
"Optimizing processes in the pursuit of sustainability involves innovation, and we believe that the technological progress brought by this application model is the first step toward in-line application, when barrier coatings will be added directly on the paperboard machine," Deganutti added.
