EU Sets Total Migration Limits for Two Substances in Food Packaging Printing Inks
Under the dual pressure of stringent EU regulations and the financial crisis, export enterprises must exercise strict control when choosing packaging material manufacturers, selecting as far as possible packaging materials with low risk, high safety performance and good environmental performance, and must understand their production processes: after printing, the solvents in the ink must be fully volatilized and the ink thoroughly cured, in compliance with the corresponding industry standards. Before using the packaging bags, enterprises may also send the packaging materials to qualified laboratories of inspection and quarantine institutions for conformity verification, so as to ensure that customs clearance of their products is not affected.
The EU Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health has established a maximum migration limit for food packaging printed with inks containing tetramethylbenzophenone or benzophenone, stipulating that the total migration limit of tetramethylbenzophenone and benzophenone from printing ink materials used in food packaging must be lower than 0.6 milligrams per kilogram. Printing inks are used in a great deal of food packaging, but they contain large quantities of toxic and harmful chemical substances such as heavy metals, residual solvents, organic volatiles and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and can contaminate the food contents through chemical migration; among these, benzene residues are extremely harmful to people and readily cause diseases such as cancer. This EU measure means that printing inks will also be included among the materials and articles subject to control under specific regulations.
