Metsä Board Designs Easily Recyclable Beverage Packaging

Published:2021-05-19 · Industry News

Metsä Board is Europe's leading producer of premium virgin-fibre paperboard and part of the Metsä Group. Its Excellence Centre in Äänekoski, Finland, has designed a light, strong and easily recyclable package for the new Chopin organic rye vodka range.

For the family distillery Podlaska Wytwórnia Wódek "Polmos" S.A., owner of the Chopin vodka brand, packaging is an important vehicle for conveying the brand spirit. As the brand's marketing coordinator Joanna Dolińczyk explained: "When looking for inspiration for the packaging design of an organic product, we wanted the packaging to reflect the product's organic production process. We hoped to create truly organic and highly eco-conscious packaging: purity, whiteness and simplicity were our three main goals."

The packaging is made of F-flute paperboard with good protective properties, and every layer is made of Metsä Board Natural WKL Bright lightweight white kraftliner. The all-white offset laminated package uses a lightweight yet sturdy structure with glue-free flaps. No adhesive is used; water-based varnish replaces low-migration ink (combined with a minimal amount of low-migration ink and water-based varnish) to create safe, stylish and easily recyclable packaging. The packaging is produced by Poland's Prost-Key Packaging.

The opening structure allows the box to be opened and closed several times while keeping the bottle firmly locked in place. Curved double folds increase the strength of the package, and the bottle is visible from the sides. The packaging features a pure white design with the word "organic" embossed on the side, highlighting its purity.

Iiro Numminen, structural packaging designer at Metsä Board, commented: "Every part of the packaging communicates the brand promise to consumers. Given the importance of the circular economy, easy recyclability was also a major factor in our design concept."

The packaging was designed and tested at the Metsä Board Excellence Centre, applying cutting-edge packaging technology and design concepts, with high-performance paperboard selected as the packaging material to improve packaging performance. The Excellence Centre accelerates material and packaging innovation and provides a collaboration platform for global customers and technology partners.

The packaging is made of Metsä Board Natural WKL Bright lightweight white kraftliner and is produced at Metsä Board's Husum mill. Its virgin fibre is 100% sourced from sustainably managed Nordic forests.
