China Has Over 160,000 Mooncake Packaging-Related Patents, About 50,000 of Them Design Patents

Published:2021-09-18 · Industry News

The Mid-Autumn Festival is approaching, and visiting relatives and friends is not complete without a box of mooncakes. In recent years all kinds of mooncake gift box designs have emerged one after another.

Tianyancha App shows that China currently has more than 160,000 mooncake packaging-related patents, of which about 50,000 are design patents. In terms of shape and structure, they include ordinary paper gift boxes, retro nostalgic tin boxes, multi-layer drawer types, convenient handbag types and practical bento box types, and so on; the patent applicants for such packaging boxes are mostly enterprises, and contain corresponding brand names, logos, patterns and other information.

It is worth noting that excessive packaging of festival gift boxes is often criticized by consumers, and some netizens have even complained that "you buy the packaging and get the mooncakes free." Recently, the State Administration for Market Regulation revised and issued the mandatory national standard "Requirements for Restricting Excessive Packaging of Commodities—Food and Cosmetics," stipulating that food and cosmetic packaging must not exceed four layers; the standard will take effect from September 2023.

Tianyancha App shows that among China's mooncake packaging-related patents there is also no shortage of environmentally friendly patents, such as "fabric bento box-type mooncake packaging structure," "a spliced mooncake packaging gift box," and "dual-use mooncake packaging outer box." Among them, the bento box-type patent shows that the outer packaging can be used as an environmentally friendly bag; the dual-use outer box patent shows that it combines the two features of a mooncake packaging box and a calendar display tool, giving consumers two benefits in one.
