5 Batches of Mooncake Gift Boxes Suspected of Excessive Packaging
According to the official WeChat account of "Shanghai Market Regulation" on September 19, the Shanghai Municipal Administration for Market Regulation carried out on-site enforcement inspections and supervisory spot checks on excessive packaging of mooncake gift boxes, and found a total of 5 batches of mooncake gift box packaging samples with unqualified void ratios, suspected of excessive packaging, involving brands such as GODIVA, Venchi, Cai Lan, Gui Man Long and Member's Mark.
Market regulation departments at the municipal and district levels in Shanghai focused their inspections on luxury mooncake gift boxes sold by chain restaurants, hotels and other enterprises in some popular commercial districts, drawing a total of 5 samples sold by 5 enterprises. On-site preliminary testing found that 4 batches of samples had packaging void ratios not conforming to GB 23350-2009 "Requirements for Restricting Excessive Packaging of Commodities—Food and Cosmetics," suspected of having excessive packaging problems. These specifically included the "Venchi" moon-viewing chocolate mooncake double-layer loose chocolate gift box, nominally distributed by Fanke (Shanghai) Trading Co., Ltd.; the "GODIVA" Yajin Linglong gift box, nominally distributed by Godiva (Shanghai) Food Trading Co., Ltd.; the "Gui Man Long" Yuexia Fu Gui Mid-Autumn gift box (mooncakes + osmanthus iced brew), nominally distributed by Shanghai Nuangui Catering Management Co., Ltd.; and the "Cai Lan" Xianyue gift box, nominally distributed by Baobao (Shanghai) Catering Management Co., Ltd.
In addition, the Shanghai Municipal Administration for Market Regulation simultaneously carried out supervisory spot checks on commodity packaging of mooncake gift boxes through a combination of online and offline methods, spot-checking a total of 8 batches of samples, involving 3 production enterprises and 4 sales enterprises (of which 6 batches of samples were drawn from online e-commerce platforms), and found 1 batch—the Member's Mark durian snowskin mooncake produced nominally by Wal-Mart (China) Investment Co., Ltd. and distributed by Wal-Mart East China Department Store Co., Ltd. on JD.com—had an unqualified packaging void ratio and was an excessively packaged product.
At present, Shanghai market regulation departments are handling the above production and operating units suspected of excessive packaging in accordance with relevant laws, regulations and procedures.
