Hainan Shuts Down Plastic Packaging Firms Across the Board as France Says No to Plastic Produce Packaging

Published:2021-11-03 · Industry News

In recent years, the use of single-use plastics in daily life has reached an intolerable level. China and other countries around the world are formulating a series of environmental protection policies to reduce the use of single-use plastics and replace them with other materials and reusable packaging.

On October 27, the Department of Ecology and Environment of Hainan Province issued the "Hainan Province Ecological and Environmental Access List (2021 Edition)" (hereinafter referred to as the "List"), indicating that Hainan will implement a negative list system for industrial access, comprehensively prohibit the development of high-energy-consumption, high-pollution and high-emission industries and low-end manufacturing, and propose to fully phase out and shut down single-use non-degradable plastic product manufacturers in Hainan Province that are included in the plastics ban list.

This is a further measure after Hainan fully banned the sale of single-use plastic packaging products in the market. This move is conducive to thoroughly eliminating the source of local single-use plastic products, thereby better implementing Hainan's green rise plan.

In addition, France will ban the use of plastic packaging for dozens of vegetables and fruits starting next year, and five years later the scope of the plastics ban will be expanded to all vegetables and fruits.

France's Ministry of the Environment released a list on the 11th. About 30 kinds of vegetables and fruits, including leeks, eggplants, tomatoes, apples, bananas and oranges, may not use plastic packaging starting January 1 next year.

A small number of perishable vegetables and fruits, such as cherry tomatoes, asparagus, mushrooms, cherries and strawberries, may still use plastic packaging next year, but they need to be phased out gradually, and all will be sold loose before July 2026.

It is estimated that nearly 40% of vegetables and fruits on the French market are sold after being wrapped in plastic. After the plastics ban is implemented, more than 1 billion unnecessary plastic packages can be reduced each year.

According to the government's plastics ban plan, France began banning the use of plastic straws, cups, knives, forks and spoons, and foam plastic takeaway lunch boxes in 2021. Starting in 2022, publications may not be transported in plastic packaging; fast food restaurants may not provide plastic toys free of charge; public places must install direct drinking water taps to reduce the use of plastic beverage bottles.
