ISO 22000 Standard Adopted for Food Packaging
On the basis of the HACCP safety management system standard, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has drawn up the ISO22000 standard - "Food (Packaging) Safety Management System - Requirements for Any Organization in the Food Chain".
The standard was drawn up jointly by experts from the food industry, specialised institutions and representatives of the Codex Alimentarius Commission, as well as bodies established jointly by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the World Health Organization. As a technical standard, it can provide guidance for enterprises in establishing an effective food safety management system and encourage enterprises to implement HACCP in a simpler and more consistent way, avoiding differences arising from different countries or different food products.
ISO22000 is a voluntary standard. It sets out a unified standard for food safety management systems, and China's food and food packaging manufacturers should take precautions, familiarise themselves with and master the standard as soon as possible, and establish and improve food safety management systems in accordance with it. The relevant departments should also impose corresponding requirements on manufacturers of imported food in line with this standard.
ISO22000 cites the five preliminary steps and seven principles put forward by the Codex Alimentarius Commission. The five preliminary steps include: assembling the HACCP team, describing the product, identifying the intended use, drawing up a flow diagram overprint, and confirming the flow diagram on site. The seven principles include: hazard analysis, determining critical control points, establishing critical limits, establishing critical control points, establishing the corrective actions to be taken when the monitoring system shows that a control point is out of control imposition, establishing verification procedures to confirm the effectiveness of the operation of the HACCP system, and establishing a documented system.
ISO22000 sets out the common requirements in food safety management, rather than requirements specific to any one type of organisation in the food chain.
ISO22000 is a new standard for food safety management systems, and it aims to ensure that there are no weak links in the food supply chain.
ISO22000 adopts the ISO9000 standard system structure, and in respect of the identification, confirmation and systematic management of food hazard risks it refers to the part of the "General Principles of Food Hygiene" issued by the Codex Alimentarius Commission that deals with the HACCP system and its application. The scope of use of ISO22000 covers the entire food chain, namely planting, farming, primary processing, manufacturing and distribution, right through to consumer use, including catering. In addition, industries closely related to food production can also adopt this standard to establish a food safety management system variable data printing, such as pesticides, veterinary drugs, food additives, storage and transport, food equipment, food cleaning services and food packaging materials. The standard can be adopted on its own or jointly with other management system standards such as ISO9001:2000.
