Aldi Germany to Trial HDPE Clear Milk Bottle Caps
German supermarket chain Aldi to trial HDPE transparent milk bottle caps

[Packaging and Printing Industry Network — Enterprise Focus] German food supermarket chain Aldi plans to replace the plastic caps of its milk bottles later this month, with the aim of promoting closed-loop recycling of food-grade high-density polyethylene (HDPE).
Aldi will conduct the trial in cooperation with milk retailer Müller, launching it in some of its UK stores later this month. The retailer said the trial will initially apply to the UK's semi-skimmed standard milk product, which previously used green caps.
Compared with colored caps, transparent plastic caps are easier to recycle together with the HDPE used to make milk bottles. If the trial succeeds, the transparent caps will be rolled out in all Müller-supplied stores. It is understood that an additional 60 tons of HDPE can be recycled into food-grade packaging each year, and Aldi and Müller say the new milk bottle caps can be reused to make new milk bottles.
Richard Gorman, Aldi's director of plastics and packaging, commented: "We know that for our consumers, their everyday products being environmentally friendly is becoming increasingly important, and we are constantly looking at how to become a more sustainable supermarket. By trialling transparent milk bottle caps, we make milk bottles easier to recycle so they can be repackaged."
In March this year, Müller replaced the blue, green and red caps of its own-brand HDPE milk bottles with transparent caps in all the retailer's stores, receiving "overwhelmingly positive" feedback.
