Japan's Mitsubishi Research Institute and 9 Companies Launch Deinking Demonstration for Flexible Packaging

Recently, under the Japanese Ministry of the Environment's FY2026 plastic resource circulation strategy framework, the Mitsubishi Research Institute (overall coordinator) has joined with nine companies — Toyo Seikan, Mitsubishi Chemical, TOPPAN, Dai Nippon Printing, RM Tohcello, Kyoeisha Chemical, ZACROS, Howa Sangyo, and Hosokawa Yoko — to officially launch a demonstration project for resource circulation of flexible packaging. The core of the project is to validate a co-creation platform model, in which multiple companies jointly use advanced recycling equipment and technologies such as delamination and deinking to resolve the structural contradiction between quality, cost, and stable supply of recycled materials. The demonstration will use unified samples for technical testing, with the goal of commercializing chemical recycling of flexible packaging (multilayer laminates and printing inks). Industry implication: Japan is shifting from single-company technology R&D to an industry-chain collaborative platform model — the difficulty in flexible packaging recycling lies not in a single technological breakthrough, but in cross-company quality control consistency and cost-sharing mechanisms. If this model is successfully validated, it is expected to provide a replicable business paradigm for chemical recycling of flexible packaging worldwide.
