Clarification on Antimony-Related Issues in PET Bottles
The antimony content in plastic bottles and the migration amount of antimony into products are strictly restricted by the relevant national standards. The following explanation is hereby made regarding issues related to antimony in PET bottles:
- The production process using antimony catalysts in the manufacture of plastic food packaging containers is widely used and recognized by countries around the world, including China.
- Recently, the internet reported the antimony content test results of a professor from Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology for plastic packaging. Upon verification, the testing method used by the professor is not the method stipulated by the national standard, and the published data did not indicate units, so it is not scientific and cannot serve as a basis for judging whether a product is qualified.
- For the limit of antimony in PET resin, the limit of antimony in PET molded products, the use amount of antimony trioxide in PET bottles together with the specific migration amount or maximum residue (calculated as antimony), and the testing methods for antimony, China has relevant national standards and regulations, such as GB13114-1991, GB13113-1991, GB9685-2008 and GB/T5009.101-2003.
- The beverage industry is an industry responsible to consumers. Ensuring that product quality and food safety conform to the relevant national standards and regulations is an enterprise's due responsibility and the bottom line of ethics; enterprises should comply with the corresponding national standards to ensure food safety.
- The beverage industry welcomes the attention of members of the public and social organizations to beverage and food safety. However, in order to avoid unnecessary doubts among consumers about food safety, it is hoped that such attention will be scientific and rigorous, and truly responsible to society and to consumers.
