General Rules for Nutrition Labeling of Prepackaged Foods Expected to Be Fully Rolled Out This Year
On January 10, at the first press conference held by the Ministry of Health in 2013, Yang Yuexin, director of the evaluation office of the Institute of Nutrition of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said that the implementing rules of the 'General Rules for Nutrition Labeling of Prepackaged Foods' are expected to be issued in full this year.
In introducing the specific measures taken since the implementation of the 'General Rules for Nutrition Labeling of Prepackaged Foods', Yang Yuexin stated:
First, Q&A on more than 70 items of content of the General Rules has been published on the Ministry of Health website, which can basically address issues of public concern and problems in enterprise implementation.
Second, the national nutrition labeling health action education plan has been launched. In this plan, five tasks are emphasized, with training as the main focus, to help enterprises improve their operational capacity or their ability to implement the standard. At the same time, a publicity and education plan is being carried out to help consumers correctly understand labels and promote label implementation. 'Let consumers understand labels - when buying things, do not just look at the shelf life, brand and price, but also look at nutrition, to guide their own lives.'
Third, the building of a technical support system has been intensified. Under the principles of the major general standard, technical support is needed to improve the implementation of the standard. A label implementation guide has been formulated, and the standard database and standard implementing rules have been completed; these are expected to be issued in full this year.
Fourth, surveys and monitoring should be done well, to understand how much consumers know about nutrition, how well enterprises execute, and how many high-sodium, high-cholesterol or high-fat foods there actually are on the market and in the same categories. At the same time, this should be combined with the prevention and control of chronic diseases to effectively promote people's health.
Fifth, a great social mobilization is needed. It is hoped that every enterprise, every organization and every individual will actively participate in this action plan to better promote the implementation of nutrition labeling.
