Analysis of the situation and potential of the Central and South American flexible packaging market
The market is developing very rapidly, with an average growth rate of 4.6%, and its total market value is expected to reach USD 5.3 billion by 2015. This is mainly caused by factors such as the continuous expansion of the supermarket retail sector, the growing population, and young consumers' love of flexible packaging products.
At present, the flexible packaging market value in Central and South America has reached USD 4.3 billion, with an annual growth rate of about 5.3%. Among them, Brazil's demand for flexible packaging grew by 48%, while Colombia and Argentina together increased by 67%. Especially in Brazil, experts predict that during the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, commodities such as flexible-packaged food and beverages will see substantial growth, which will drive the development of the entire flexible packaging market. At present, Brazil's food industry has already met "modern" international standards, and a large number of flexible-packaged foods have entered the domestic market, which has played a driving role in the development of the flexible packaging industry.
Brazil's demand for flexible packaging is basically self-sufficient domestically, with only 1% relying on imports and 2% exported to other countries in Central and South America. Locally there are a large number of BOPP and PE film manufacturers, which solves the problem of production materials for flexible packaging, but PET film is produced in only one region, and the shortfall needs to be imported. At present, some Brazilian enterprises with diversified businesses are still expanding their business through the local market, including alliances or acquisitions of other local enterprises. Therefore, on the whole, the future development space and potential of the flexible packaging market in Central and South America are still very large.
