Гибкая упаковка востребована у потребителей: как сократить использование пластика для повышения экологичности?
Flexible packaging refers to packaging made from various flexible plastic materials that can conform to the shape of the product being packaged. It is widely used in a variety of industries, including food and beverage, personal care products, pharmaceuticals and household goods.
It is worth noting that regulations and consumer preferences regarding packaging sustainability are changing, and companies are increasingly committed to greener solutions. Even so, the flexible packaging market remains resilient and is expected to grow substantially in the coming years.
The flexible packaging market is set for substantial growth
The flexible packaging market will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 8.89%, reaching USD 450.65 billion by 2030. Flexible packaging is a versatile, lightweight form of packaging made from plastic films and sheets, and it is expected to see significant growth in the coming years.
According to a comprehensive research report by Market Research Future (MRFR), the flexible packaging market was valued at USD 200.13 billion in 2021. The industry is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 8.89% during the forecast period (2022-2030), reaching USD 450.65 billion by 2030.
Growing demand for versatile packaging solutions: Flexible packaging offers a wide range of advantages that make it the first choice across industries. The lightweight and flexible nature of the material allows it to be easily formed into different shapes and sizes to meet the diverse packaging requirements of different products. This type of packaging is commonly used in the food and beverage industry, particularly for packaging snacks, frozen foods and ready-to-eat meals. It helps maintain the freshness and quality of food while providing consumers with attractive and convenient packaging solutions.
Multifaceted packaging solutions: In addition to the food and beverage industry, flexible packaging has a wide range of applications in several other fields. It is widely used for the packaging of pharmaceuticals, personal care products, detergents, cleaners and other household products. The ability of flexible packaging to accommodate a variety of product types and to provide protection from external factors such as moisture, light and air makes it a versatile and highly popular packaging solution.
Expected market growth: The MRFR report forecasts substantial growth in the flexible packaging market. Starting from USD 227.96 billion in 2022, the market is expected to nearly double to USD 450.65 billion by 2030. This growth can be attributed to a number of factors, such as rising consumer demand for convenient and sustainable packaging, advances in printing technology that enhance visual appeal, and the increasing adoption of flexible plastic packaging in e-commerce and retail.
Why do consumers favor flexible packaging?
Convenience: Consumers lead fast-paced lifestyles, and over the years this has greatly changed the way brands package their products. The demand for consumer convenience is a key factor in the popularity of flexible packaging, because it is easy to store, easy to open and offers the ability to be resealed. Compared with rigid plastic or glass, the lightweight nature of flexible packaging makes it ideal for on-the-go consumption. When made from sturdy composite materials, flexible packaging ensures the safety and quality of the product when it is handled or dropped. For packaging designers, flexible packaging offers complete versatility and is suitable for product applications ranging from detergents to baby food. Flexible packaging can also be easily dispensed through built-in features, including caps, zippers, easy-tear perforations and overlapping designs.
Extended shelf life: One of the most important environmental issues in the world is food waste in the supply chain, retail and households. Flexible packaging can be designed with high-barrier materials and airtight seals to ensure that gases and moisture are kept from moving in or out, and it is also suitable for pasteurization and retort applications. This extended freshness means fewer products are sent to landfill due to spoilage. In addition, the ability to reseal also reduces consumers' reliance on secondary plastics such as household cling film.
Outstanding design: Brand owners are constantly looking for ways to extend product lines in order to improve shelf differentiation. Unlike other packaging formats, flexible packaging substrates are able to print high-quality and impactful graphics across 100% and 360 degrees of branding; such packs can stand out on the shelf and are also highly ergonomic for consumers.
Flexible packaging enables products to stay fresh longer, which is crucial for consumers' mobile lifestyles, where shelf life is key. It is also easier to transport and use, offering consumers greater convenience while keeping the contents fresh. The other advantages of this packaging format are too numerous to list, and innovation in formats continues to drive the popularity of flexible packaging today, and will continue to do so in the future.
How can flexible packaging reduce plastic under the green packaging trend?
As green packaging work is promoted and implemented in China and awareness of green consumption spreads, some e-commerce platforms, logistics service providers and brands have begun to take the lead in reducing excessive packaging and improving packaging utilization rates.
Plastic flexible packaging is widely used in food, beverage, personal care, pharmaceutical and other fields. Common plastic flexible packaging includes the plastic bags and plastic films commonly used in daily life, outer packaging bags for confectionery, potato chips and wet wipes, as well as tube-type packaging such as facial cleanser. In order to achieve functions such as barrier, freshness preservation and moisture resistance, the outer packaging of these food and personal care products is usually made from a variety of composite materials. For example, chocolate packaging bags are made from different types of plastic, aluminum foil, adhesives and inks, with as many as 12 layers.
The root cause of plastic pollution is the massive use of single-use plastics, and the efficiency of pollution control is far behind the pace of pollution. Under the current development trend, the waste plastic flowing into the environment globally will triple by 2040. The material metabolism system of plastic is like a pool with water flowing in at one end and out at the other; new virgin plastic and the absorption capacity of the waste management system are the gates for inflow and outflow respectively. To solve plastic pollution, we need to turn our attention to the source of the problem.
Cracking the difficult problem of plastic flexible packaging being large in volume, dispersed and hard to recycle requires a full-chain, systematic solution. As market participants, companies are the key game-changers. Supporting policies and improved infrastructure are important conditions for achieving the circular development of plastic flexible packaging, and neither can be dispensed with.
Source reduction is the priority solution
Last March, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation released the report "Implementing a Circular Economy for Plastic - Flexible Packaging Action Is Imminent". Based on extensive consultation with industry experts, the report put forward an overall development strategy for the global plastic flexible packaging industry. The report points out that although recycling and regeneration and material substitution for plastic flexible packaging are necessary, the limitations of these two strategies restrict their development prospects. To solve plastic pollution, the priority strategy for the transformation and development of the flexible packaging industry should be source reduction, eliminating unnecessary flexible packaging directly or through innovative means. China's "14th Five-Year Plan" action plan for plastic pollution control also mentions continuously advancing the reduction of single-use plastic products in key areas such as e-commerce, express delivery and food delivery.
The potential of direct elimination remains to be unlocked
Direct elimination means completely abandoning the use of unnecessary flexible packaging without substitution, and it applies to categories of flexible packaging that do not perform necessary functions (such as protection, containment, promotion and convenience). The potential for direct elimination exists widely across different industries and application scenarios. It is estimated that, globally, flexible packaging that can be directly eliminated accounts for about 5%-10% of the total flexible packaging market. In China, a small number of companies have already launched solutions for directly eliminating plastic flexible packaging. For example, Unilever directly removed the outer plastic wrap from its ice cream brand Cornetto. However, compared with the opportunities still to be tapped, the attempts and explorations on the market today are still very limited.
The development of innovative elimination requires collaboration from multiple parties
Globally, a number of innovative technologies and business models are continuously developing that can help eliminate more single-use plastic flexible packaging. Among them, water-soluble packaging, the development of solid products, edible coatings, reusable packaging and refillable models are representative, and they have considerable development potential in the short to medium term.
